The Influence of Sex and Gender on Disease Expression and Treatment

This course is designed to give the student a basic scientific understanding of the major physiological differences between the sexes, the influences these differences have on illness and health outcomes, and the implications for policy, medical research, and health care.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Identify differences and similarities between females and males in the pathophysiology of certain diseases.
  2. Describe how differences between females and males in the manifestation of disease may impact treatment options.
  3. Recognize the challenges of performing pre-clinical and clinical research on major organ systems using both sexes.
  4. Explain sex differences in response to substance abuse and treatment.
