Developmental Biology : Introduction to Core Concepts for the Lesson

In completing this lesson, the student will gain a general understanding of the following:

  • Normal physical growth and psychosocial development in women and men across the lifespan, and
  • How those aspects of development set the foundation for an individual's health status.


Lesson Four Learning Objectives

Upon completing this lesson, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the role of the SRY gene
  • Name at least two sex-linked disorders or syndromes
  • Define the term "teratogen"
  • Name four types of teratogens
  • Identify the major hormones that influence female and male sexual development
  • Describe sex/gender characteristics of the following, from birth to puberty: weight and height, brain neuron differentiation, motor skills, sensory and perceptual responses, cognition, and emotional coping strategies
  • Explain the relationships of socioenvironmental factors to a child's development of self-concept and gender identity
  • Describe physiological differences between women and men during fertile adulthood
  • Characterize the aging (65+) population in terms of longevity and health conditions for women and men
